Have you seen the cute little crochet edged pillowcases in Happy Home? Oh the book tells you exactly how to create those beautiful scallops, the pillowcase, the works but the problem for me is I have TRIED AND TRIED to learn to crochet and well, my crochet does not turn out like those on the pretty pillowcases. SO guess what I resort to? Ready made crochet trim!!!
How did I attach the crochet trim? Why I took pictures to show you! Yay!
First I cut out my pillowcase and if you cut yours where the sides are both cut, then you need to sew down one of the edges. Then I pin down my trim where the raw edges of the crochet trim is along the raw edges of the pillowcase. I use my ruler to ensure the trim is pinned down straight.
I stitch down my trim using a zig zag stitch and matching thread. You will find the stitch "disappears" nicely. If your trim is not hanging off the edge and is really wide, you might consider sewing down both sides of the trim to keep it from curling up after washing and drying.
I use a narrow zig zag stitch on the edge trim of the pillowcase. If you wanted the trim to be even more on the edge you could purchase matching cross stitch or embroidery thread and sew the premade crochet trim on the edge using a blanket stitch. I want quick results so I sew it on using my sewing machine.
Here you can see my trim from the back. "Whoa that some wavy sewing there Jenny!" Hey! It's THE BACK PEOPLE! I don't obsess about backs or insides of things. I just want them to wash up without fraying everywhere. Now I WILL say I like how the pillowcases are finished in the Happy Home book better because they look really nice when your pillowcases fall open on your bed. I had already started cutting out pillowcases before I received the book. I, ahem, have a UFO issue...
For the flowers I zig zag stitched those on too! You can stitch an X on them to make it more secure.
After I sew on my trim I sew up the pillowcase and I am finished! These pillowcases are great quick projects using premade trim. They are perfect for gifts.
I used Riley Blake trim because it's so pretty and vibrant and readily available here at Granmas Treasures! I know she is trying to get all the colors so ask if she does not have the piece you are seeking.
I used my absolute favorite fabrics for the pillowcases. Jennifer Paganelli's Crazy Love! Did you know they had to reprint it back in May it sold so quickly!? WHOA! Apparently I am not the only one that is ga ga for it! The 'framed' aka tacked to the wall behind the frame fabric is the gorgeous Super Fly Zebra by Jennifer Paganelli. The Super Fly prints are selling like hotcakes too apparently so you better grab some when you see it. Marie Madeline Studio has a good sampling of both lines. I WON a big ole' stack of Super Fly, Crazy Love and Girl's World Vibe through her Photo Challenge. I TOLD you to enter didn't I !?! I have already made a dress out of the orange zebra from Super Fly and I cannot wait to show you! The J pillow is courtesy of Sweet Melissa Peda of 100 Billon Stars. Love that girl!
This is one of the three tutorials I have mentione here and on Facebook so one down two to go. I will be back with that ruffle dress tutorial soon!

Awesome, as usual!! I am crochet-challenged as well and want to do the same as you, lovely Jenny!
ReplyDeleteYour photo turned out great! These are so pretty in person!
ReplyDeleteThat is very cute. I think it would be a cute beginner project for my 9 yr old when we get a table for her to use my old sewing machine!
ReplyDeleteSo much Sis Boom happiness in that first photo!
ReplyDeleteI really need that book! My "wish list" in Amazon is growing. Very, very pretty.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! I just love how the lace and extras bring out the Sis Boom wonderfulness!! Great tutorial Jenny!
ReplyDeleteThanks! :)
Jenny - thanks for mentioning Granma's! Yes, we are trying to stay stocked on Riley Blake's trims. And they are so much faster to use than crocheting your own! But if you really want to give it a try, Lizbeth Cordnett is a WONDERful thread to work with, and comes in a zillion colors and totally affordable.-D
